Welcome to EDUC 22100!

This course is an introduction to the political, historical, sociological, and philosophical foundations  of urban education. Through engagement with the scholarly field of social foundations (politics,  history, sociology, and philosophy of education), students will explore how the dynamics of  schooling relate to larger social, cultural, economic, political, and historical forces. Using a  sociocultural lens, students in this course will investigate the ways that social class, race, gender,  community, ability, ethnicity, immigration, sexuality, and other related factors intersect and impact  student outcomes. Special emphasis will be placed on urban educational settings serving students  from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Note about our Course Site:

This class course site is designed with a Universal Design for Learning framework in mind, which means we believe that inclusivity and accessibility occurs before and in process of meeting students. This site and this course are living artifacts and archives of our community knowledge over the course of these 16 weeks. My syllabus and resources on the site will continue to be modified, extended, and developed with students.

I have a committment to providing equity, agency, and self-determination in your learning experience, especially as folx ready to leap deep into the field of education. At least 75% of our syllabus is OER (Open Education Resource) meaning FREE99 to you! If a text, video, or other course material is not readily and easily able to be accessed, please feel free to reach out to me.
